This guy has always been one of the most talented trotters of his generation and while he was beaten last start, I’m willing to forgive that. He had to work to the chair from a 20-metre handicap against older horses and while he was pretty plain late, he can improve tonight. He won his heat narrowly but impressively over Vincennes (10) and given he races best when the pace is on; expect them to keep running the whole way tonight.

Quite simply, I believe this guy is one of Australia’s two or three best trotters and while he is first-up tonight, he has trialled well beating the pacers by 20 metres at Shepparton on June 26. Provided he brings his form from last preparation which saw him run second in heat and final of the Great Southern Star, then he can sit parked at worst and still dominate his rivals here.

You only have to go back two starts to see a strong second to Sunset Invasion from this guy and that is the right sort of form for this race. Truth be told while he failed to stick on in the Winters Trotters Cup final, he would only need to be somewhere near his best to be a serious winning threat tonight and at the odds, I’m willing to back him in.

This girl showed terrific early speed last time and if there is a place I would want to be in this sort of race then it’s in front. She is also coming good at the right time of year, I was impressed with the way she travelled prior to breaking two starts ago at Kilmore and while it was probably one of the weaker of the heats, she battled on grimly in last start.

This girl is also a little underrated and while she is unlikely to find the front tonight, her form is impossible to ignore on the each way basis. Her win over Meadow Valley Road three starts ago in impressive time at Maryborough was followed by a forgivable sixth in the Home Grown Classic final where she was parked for much of the early part of the race, and then a return effort for second in her heat of this race means she is some rough chance again.

This really does look a genuine match race between two rising stars in Eljaykay Phoenix (2) and Illawong Armstrong (12), they have quite clearly stamped themselves as the two best young trotters in Victoria and if they both trot cleanly, should fight out the finish. In saying that I’m confident Black Valley (1) with a gun run is the key chance for third however don’t ignore Kyvalley Boomerang (3), Glintintheeye (4) and Majestic Jess (8) for the multiples.

Spidergrace (6) and Asdenro (11) look the key chances in this race for mine and while Guiltless (9) will have his admirers, I’ve loved the way Savannah Jay Jay (4) has shaped up at his first two starts. He has hit the line hard in both and must be a serious winning threat so I’m playing the following three trifectas.
