Best Bets / All-Up ($46)
Shark Port (Race 2 no.6) $1.70
This guy has had just the two starts but after cruising across from the wide barrier on debut for an all the way win, he was beaten only by Mach Doro at his only other start. At that stage Mach Doro was looking like Victoria’s best juvenile and his run in defeat there was super because he sprinted away from the rest of the field nicely. He has returned for two impressive trial wins so expect him to be close enough to the mark to get the job done tonight.
Virginia Lightning (Race 4 no.1) $1.70
Returning from almost a year off, this mare notched up a terrific win from the pole second up before having to sit parked last time. She hit the lead there before being reined in late by the backmarkers so in a more suitable race here, she should prove hard to beat. Medonc (6) does have good early speed but even if Virginia Lightning (1) positions up behind him, she has the turn of foot to outsprint them in this one lap dash.
Lady Patti (Race 9 no.4) $1.60
There is no doubt Lady Patti (4) has looked quite the talent at times, winning her way through to an SA Oaks at just start number five before tackling a Vic Oaks heat and final. Although she can be a little hit and miss, her first up win from a year off back in early April was brilliant at this course. She does seem to enjoy mile racing so the 1200-metre dash here shouldn’t be any problem whatsoever given she is fourth up and likely rock-hard fit now.
Best Value ($20 win)
Nobetterthanthis (Race 6 no.1) $2.60
Tonight’s draw and class looks ideal for this filly. She was second only to Vic Oaks placegetter Berisari at this track three starts back and from her pole marking draw I can see her holding up behind the likely leader in Ocean Bay (3) and given that horse is in terrific form herself, there aren’t many better places to be over the 1720 metres at Melton. She was just touched off by Awesome Mattjesty (6) last time but given he tagged in off her back there, and won’t be able to do the same here, rate Nobetterthanthis (1) clearly the hardest to beat.
Soho Ledger (Race 5 no.4) $4
There’s no bones about this, we are tackling a tough race here but I just think Soho Ledger (4) could be able to knock off his more highly fancied rivals. He is an untapped talent who has been carving it up in easier races and while he meets The Boss Man (11) and Bellmac Kody (6) tonight, I’m confident he has the ability to mix it with them. He is by no means blistering from the strands but with a safe getaway, I think we may see even better than the $4 marked in today’s paper and for that reason he looks overs.
Best Roughie ($5 win x $15 place)
Hes Magic Red (Race 7 no.2) $17
This guy was terrific when going down in a blanket finish at his first Victorian start just on a week ago. That was a pretty strong race with the likes of Our Femme Fatale involved so if he can cross Flyin Fox (1) early we will almost be counting our cash and even if not I think he is a terrific place chance with any luck at all.
