Good Form Preview - Terang Cup Night

THE GAME PLANS for Terang Cup Night

Michael Polster (@mickpolster)

Best Bets

All Honour (Race 2 no. 3) $1.60
This guy is no start but he looks perfectly placed here with the claim for Dave Moran and to say he will appreciate this class of horse after bumping into the likes of My Temudjin and Keayang Steamer at his past two is a big understatement.  He draws to race in or near the lead and should be too good for a moderate bunch.

Magical Telf (Race 6 no. 4) $1.60
Unbeaten in 7 runs for Dean Braun and although he is yet to mix it with the smart ones he looks destined for the big time.  He was an easy Menangle winner prior to going for a spell and has had the benefit of two trial hit outs at Melton in recent weeks to tune him up for his first run in 6 months.  He looks a great chance of rolling to the lead here, but even if he has to park out he still should get the job done.

Value Bets

Ballochbuie (Race 4 no.7) $12
There is no doubt that Charlie Machsheen is the testing material but I think he is beatable and in the pursuit of value I’m going to have something each way on a 1 x 3 basis on this fellow.  He beat Restrepo in a heat of the Central Victorian Pacing Championship at Maryborough three runs back where he led and although he draws the extreme gate tonight there doesn’t appear to be any real pace to his inside and it wouldn’t totally shock me if Gavin Lang puts his foot down at the start and sends this bloke to the front.  He will take running down should that scenario unfold.

Our Arlington (Race 7 no. 6) $5/$1.88 TAB Fixed Odds
Was terrific in defeat behind Smolda in 1:52.6 at Melton last Saturday night where he chased hard from the rear and he was super in the Pure Steel at Ballarat prior behind Highview Tommy after missing away from the stand.  He won the Hamilton Cup four back in fine style and with a forward spot his for the taking tonight from the front line he looks a great gamble each way on a 1 x 3 basis.

Be Cool (Race 8 no. 1) $7
Western Rockstar is clearly the one to beat in this but the way he is being driven at present (get back, run on) it does open up the race a touch and now that this guy gains a run courtesy of the scratching of Guilty Rama I think he has a terrific each way chance.  He wasn’t suited from a back row draw in his heat when a close up sixth to Shalackin but he gets the opportunity to lead these from the pole and being a tad one-paced Greg Sugars is sure to rate him at even sections.  He will give plenty of cheek from the front end and will be getting some of mine on a 1 x 3 basis.

Additallup (Race 8 no. 8) $6
Now that Be Cool has got a run it really changes the complexion of this race and the draw for this talented filly isn’t as bad as it looked prior to that fellow gaining a start.  She was very good in defeat in her heat when a narrow second to Shalackin after travelling wide the final circuit and tonight she will get the opportunity to get a cheap run on the pegs behind Be Cool and utilise the sprint lane.  I think she represents good value and I’ll be having something on her each way on a 1 x 3 basis.

Quaddies x4 $100 Outlay
11/ 2/ 4/ 6,9,10,12.  $35 gets you 875%
11/ 4,5,6,7/ 4/ 6,9,10,12.  $35 gets you 218.75%
4,7/ 2/ 4/ 6,9,10,12.  $15 gets you 187.5%
4,7/ 4,5,6,7/ 4/ 6,9,10,12.  $15 gets you 46.87%

Best Bet

Charlie Machsheen (Race 4 no. 11) $1.60
This rising 4YO star is a rung below Chariots of Fire class but he’ll be rapt to avoid Restrepo tonight and has so much class on his rivals he could be cut loose to find the front from his second line draw and still be too good on the line. You wouldn’t want any shorter than the $1.60 but if you get it then have a decent whack.

Best Value

Keayang Cullen (Race 7 no. 10) $4.20 TAB Fixed Odds – Click here to bet on this horse now
I was pretty confident that Im Corzin Terror would work his way to the lead & win this race before he was scratched, but with him out of play I’m almost as bullish that this bloke is the one to beat. Versatile and brilliant, he looks capable of stepping up from talented 4YO to top class 5YO if his body holds up and tonight will only need to get into the fight at some stage to figure late.

Best Roughie

Cyrus (Race 6 no. 11) $15
I happily admit to being the head cheerleader in this guy’s fan club but he even surprised me when ripping home in freakish late numbers to win at Melton last time out. This is a quality race but if he can get a three-wide toe into the race courtesy of Fearless Leader (12) then the $15 quote looks very juicy indeed.

Money Race - Race 6

Love this race for a punt as I reckon three horses are just better than their rivals and that the $1.60 favourite Magical Telf (4) is no good thing. Play Trifectas as I have below and hope the fave gets parked and then ambushed on the line.

4,11,12/ 4,11,12/ 1,4,8,11,12. $61 gets 350%.
4,11,12/ 1,8/ 1,4,8,11,12. $27 gets 150%
4,11,12/ 4,11,12/ 2,9. $12 gets 100%.

Quaddies (x2)

11/ 2,5,6,7,9/ 4,11,12/ 10. $50 gets 333.33%
11/ 2,5,6,7,9/ 4,11,12/ 2,4,6,9,12. $50 gets 66.67%

The Cup/ Play of the Night

Punting doyen Brian Atkinson had many pearls of wisdom about how to win on the wager, but one of his best was that in a wide-open race race where you're not keen on the favourite, it's often wise to box the field in a Trifecta & hope for a result.
That's my plan in tonight's Terang Pacing Cup, where the enigmatic Mustang Mach is favourite and virtually every horse can win. Good luck & cross your fingers for value

Box Trifecta: The Field. $100 gets 20.41%.

Best Value

Our Walden Bury (Race 4 no. 5) $21

Don't be fooled by the fact he won at mildura last start as the victory was full of merit & he looks every chance of figuring again tonight at massive odds.

Illawong Magic (Race 5 no. 5) $7.50 TAB Fixed Odds - Click here to bet on this horse now

This guy has been cruising through his classes for Ross Sugars and while I concede Earl Harbour (2) remains the one to beat, from a value perspective this trotter, who is an excellent beginner and may roll straight to the front, looks a better betting option.

The Phantom (Race 7 no. 9) $7, National Service (no. 4) $13 Rodrigo (no. 8) $16

All odds with TAB Fixed odds - click here to bet on these horses now

All three of these pacers look terrific Each Way value in a wide open race. I'm particularly keen on The Phantom (9) but suggest you have something Each Way on the lot.

BLACK BOOKERS (Racing Tonight)

Chuck Wagon (Race 5 no. 6) $5.50 TAB Fixed Odds - Click here to bet on this horse now

Ran a cracking race at Melton two weeks back when second to Monsieur Deville after sitting wide for a good portion of the 2240m journey and he did beat home the favourite for tonight’s race Earl Harbour in the Horsham Trotters Cup three runs ago so he must be given a strong chance in this tonight.

Rodrigo (Race 7 no. 8) $16/$3.72 TAB Fixed Odds - Click here to bet on this horse now

Smashed the clock at Melton last start where he charged home from near last on the turn for second to Keayang Cullen and although the draw makes his task a difficult one tonight he is definitely not the worst and is worthy of a little something each way at the juicy odds.

STAR TRIALLER

Goodtime Marjie (Race 1 no. 8) $4
Emma Stewart-trained daughter of Village Jasper on debut tonight who won a Ballarat trial 20 days ago where she rated 2:03.1 and scooted home in 28.7.  The draw is a bit tricky and she will need some fortune but the Emma Steward/Chris Alford combination is lethal.

BLACK BOOKER (Melton Last Night)

Hall Of Famer
Had been battling a bit this campaign before putting up a terrific performance last night when second to the smart Keayang Steamer where he sat parked and battled on strongly in 1:53.3 for the short course.  That run indicates he is getting back to his best and a win is just around the corner.

STATS THAT MATTER - TERANG PACING CUP

Since it became a Metropolitan Class race in 2002, the Terang Pacing Cup has been a happy hunting ground for 3rd or 4th favourites who are drawn the second row.

All of which augurs well for Chariots of Fire placegetter THE PHANTOM.
