Stawell can be a slightly tricky to punt on because early speed and tactics often decide races, but as is the case with most 800m circuits, if you’ve got a big class edge you’ll probably still taste success. Having said that, I’m going to avoid a few of the potentially too-short favourites on the programme and target 1 Best Bet @ a handy price along with 1 Best Roughie, 2 Money Races & some Quads.

Best Bet ($50 Win)

Bronze Destiny (Race 6 no. 7) $3.50
I was really impressed with the way this bloke hit the line first up from a break @ Geelong last Monday afternoon. He charged home to grab second behind the on-fire Union Belle there and with the hectic early speed expected here I think this bloke can peel wide when Kate Gath sees fit and out-stay a field of handy but not exceptional C2-C3 rivals.

Best Roughie ($10 by $15)

Sorority Sister (Race 7 no. 2) $12
This is purely a price issue as plenty of these can win here but there’s nothing wrong this girls’ recent form and in another race where they’ll fly early I’m hoping she can lob a handy spot, do little work and still have something in the locker for the lane.

Rather than Best-Bet Sweet Wise (7), who I think should have this race on toast if she’s somewhere near right, I’ve opted to isolate her as the only winning chance here while also predicting that the usually honest Tearitup (8) will join her on the podium.

Race 8

If he handles Stawell’s tight-turning circuit then Unico Crown (4) should lead and win here while his only possible danger should be the very smart Glenferrie Typhoon (6). If either trotter gallops we are in a bit of bother but if they stay in gait one of the below tricks should lob.
